Children Get NetSmartz
Today, millions of American kids face a new threat from cyber stalkers. Beginning in August 2005, The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children/Collier County rolled out its award-winning animated, interactive NetSmartz program to help keep kids safer online. Teachers were trained on the program and NetSmartz activities were installed on school computers.
In 2007, with the help of Collier County Child Safety Consortium members, NCMEC/Collier County designed and distributed age appropriate NetSmartz stickers to be inserted into agendas for students in kindergarten through senior year of high school. The stickers were introduced by educators during the first week of school. Visit NetSmartz.org to learn more.
Child Photo ID
One of the most important tools for law enforcement to use in the case of a missing child is an up-to-date, good-quality photograph. NCMEC/Collier County is working collaboratively with the Collier County Sheriff's Department to provide high quality photos and a Child I.D. Passport to children at events across our community.
Community Awareness
NCMEC/Collier County reaches out to parents to provide online prevention strategies to help keep our kids safer. A major focus in local efforts over the next year includes reaching beyond the classroom to parents. Focus groups with kids show educational parent workshops are an imperative next step in local efforts. As a result, NCMEC/Collier County is partnering with libraries, law enforcement, schools and community centers to bring important prevention strategies to parents. Hand in hand with these outreach efforts, is a major initiative to work with families in our Hispanic community through our bilingual programs beginning in 2007 in Immokalee.
